For years after coming home, I struggled with adjusting. The isolation, the feeling that no one understood, the memories that wouldn't fade.
But music—especially country music that tells real stories about service—became my therapy. Songs that captured what I'd been through, what I was feeling.
Here's what helped me:
- I started listening to music that validated my experiences
- Writing down my own stories, inspired by the songs
- Connecting with other veterans who understood
- Finding a counselor who specialized in veteran issues
I'm not saying I'm "fixed"—we're all works in progress. But I'm in a much better place now.
